Regular brushing and combing twice a week is essential in order to remove substantial wooly hair shed from the moderately dense undercoat, and not only the outer guard coat which protects the undercoat. Special care should be taken to brush the coat all the way to the skin with the appropriate brush. The best outer coat is somewhere between coarse and silky. The density of the hair coat can be misleading, it is dense. The Golden Retriever should be completely brushed out at least weekly to deter excessive shedding, tangling and matting. If home maintenance is done properly; full service grooming is recommended every 4-6 weeks, if not professional grooming is recommended at least every 1-2 weeks.
